The British Nutrition Foundation’s 11th Healthy Eating Week is underway, and Flora is on a mission to get the UK thinking about heart health – and your diet is a great place to start.
Research commissioned by Flora shows:
- Only half (53%) of Brits think about their heart health on a weekly basis, despite two-thirds (64%) of those surveyed having previously been affected by, or had someone they know affected, by heart problems.
- Half of Brits (47%) consume butter at least once a day – a product that is high in saturated and trans fats and known to increase cholesterol.
- Nearly a fifth (23%) say they will only think about their heart health often when they are older or have a health issue.
- Chocolate, a roast dinner, and pizza are Brits’ top 3 favourite foods.
As Brits consider healthiness as the most important factor when purchasing food (26%), Flora is encouraging Brits to swap dairy butter for healthier alternatives such as Flora 100% Natural Ingredients, rich in Omega 3 – with healthier, unsaturated fats and no trans fats.
Ebbonnie Platt, Flora’s global nutrition manager, says:“This Healthy Eating Week, we want people to think more about eating well for their heart. As our research shows, we don’t consider our heart health often enough when making food choices, despite our heart being our number one health concern. People often ask about the best diet for heart health and the answer is that you need a balanced diet, with everything in moderation – that means plenty of fruit and veg, whole grain foods, healthy fats, and oils, and opt for plant-based proteins such as legumes and nuts or enjoy some fish. Aim to reduce red meat, added sugars, and salt, and limit sources of in unhealthy fat, replacing saturated fats with mono- and polyunsaturated fats. With 100% plant-based ingredients, swap from dairy butter to a nutrient-dense fat spread such as Flora, which is rich in heart-friendly unsaturated fats which contain omega 3, shown to have a number of benefits for heart health.”
