How to run a successful side hustle in the UK

Side hustles have exploded in popularity across the UK, and for good reason. Rising living costs, flexible work environments, and the growing influence of social media have inspired millions to explore new ways of earning. Whether you’re supplementing your income, pursuing a passion project, or building a future business, a side hustle gives you control, flexibility, and financial freedom.

Recent research shows that 39% of Brits now have a side hustle, earning an average of £210 a week, with over 460,000 new side hustlers in 2024 alone. From working mums seeking flexibility to Gen Zs capitalising on digital skills, the side-hustle boom is reshaping the UK economy.

Understand the UK side-hustle landscape

Rising costs of living, the gig economy, and post-pandemic work flexibility are key drivers behind the surge in side hustles in the UK. Many see it not just as a financial buffer, but a step toward independence.

The motivations behind side hustles are diverse, and for many, side hustles are no longer just for “extra income” – they’re passion-driven businesses in their own right. Explore Finder’s breakdown of UK side hustle stats for more insights into this growing trend.

Choose the right hustle & define your niche

There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to side hustles. The best side hustles fit around your schedule, interests, and financial goals. Whether you’re looking for something hands-on, like tutoring or freelance design, or something more passive, like drop shipping or affiliate marketing.

Explore top ideas in Crunch’s list of side hustles and consider:

  • Your availability – how many hours can you dedicate a week?
  • Scalability – can it grow into a full-time gig?
  • Alignment with personal interests – will you still enjoy it after 6 months?

Finding your niche, whether it’s personalised fitness plans or vintage clothing, gives your hustle identity and direction.

Navigate tax, legal & financial considerations

It’s essential to understand your obligations. In 2024, the government raised the trading allowance to £3,000, meaning around 300,000 people no longer need to file self-assessments. However, if you earn more than that, or sell more than 30 items or £1,700 via platforms like Vinted, Etsy, or Depop, you’re required to report income to HMRC.

To stay compliant, keep clear financial records, open a separate business bank account, and consider accounting software or a freelance accountant. Learn more via the UK Government’s announcement.

Build, promote & scale your side hustle

Once you’ve chosen your hustle, it’s time to get it off the ground. Start by setting realistic goals, commit to a schedule, and use free tools like social media, content platforms, and email marketing to promote your offering. Consider joining local business groups or online communities to find support and stay motivated.

When operating online, especially across borders or when handling customer data, don’t forget about digital privacy. Use a reliable VPN to protect your privacy, avoid regional restrictions, and ensure secure remote work, especially when your business crosses digital borders.
