InstaVolt breaks ground north of Winchester on the UK’s largest rapid-only EV charging Super Hub

InstaVolt has broken ground north of Winchester on the UK’s largest rapid-only EV charging Super Hub.

Located at Three Maids Hill just metres from the A34 junction close to the M3, the hub will have 44 charging bays, including drive-through bays for large/towing vehicles and accessible charging bays, as well as an on-site restaurant and play area.

The project represents a significant investment and highlights InstaVolt’s commitment to expanding the UK’s rapid charging infrastructure on the strategic road network. With a focus on renewable energy, the site will also boast large ground-mounted and roof-mounted solar arrays and on-site battery energy storage systems.

Basingstoke based InstaVolt is the UK’s largest rapid EV charging network and CEO Delvin Lane said: “There are now more than 1,100,000 fully electric cars on UK roads and Three Maids is the first of our new generation of Super Hubs. It represents a major landmark for us and will be game changing for EV drivers.”

“Linking the South with the Midlands and beyond, the site will be a gateway to the Jurassic Coast and the South West for EV drivers who will be able to head off south confident in the knowledge that they will be able to stop off, have the convenience of contactless payment, and get a fast and reliable charge.”

“The new site will be truly state of the art and offer a host of on-site amenities including food, drink, and toilets. Families will be able to enjoy a break while the kids can stretch their legs in the play area. Everyone can recharge and be back on the road in no time.”

Plans for the EV Super Hub were approved by Winchester City Council late last year and Cllr Kelsie Learney, Cabinet Member for Climate Emergency, gave them her full backing. Cllr Learney joined Delvin Lane for the ground breaking and said: “Switching to electric vehicles is a key part of our strategy for decarbonising going forward and facilities like this play an important part in enabling that.”

Delvin continued: “As well as providing substantial charging for cars, there will be the provision of long bays for larger vehicles. We also understand that our network needs to be suitable for everyone, which is why our plans include designs to create accessibility for all.”

“Delivering Super Hubs like Three Maids is essential to improving the charging infrastructure across the country, bringing continued confidence not only to the sector as a whole but crucially to those motorists who are making the switch to a more sustainable and greener future by choosing to drive an EV.”

Work on Three Maids is due to complete by Spring 2025 and is part of InstaVolt’s new phase of growth to deliver on its commitment to install 11,000 ultra rapid chargers in the UK and Ireland.
