Kitchen island is the undisputed design hero of the modern home, acording to research from Wickes

Kitchen island For millions of houseproud Brits, a kitchen island is no longer just a practical feature – it’s the ultimate symbol of success. New research from Wickes reveals that this coveted addition has now evolved into the defining statement of a dream kitchen, beating instant boiling water taps and wine coolers in the ‘impress the guests’ stakes.

Almost a fifth of homeowners (18%) say a kitchen island is the single feature that completes their ideal kitchen, and they outrank other symbols of having truly ‘made it’, for things like personalised number plates, designer luggage, and ‘his and hers’ bathroom sinks.

With around one in five UK homes now boasting a kitchen island, Wickes’ study sheds light on why they’ve become such a sought-after feature. The top reasons Brits invest in them is to get creative when hosting buffets (55%), enhanced functionality for cooking and meal prep (38%), and extra dining space (37%). Homeowners are even creating a social hub (37%) with their islands, displaying decorative items or plants (35%) on them, and doubling the space up as a kids’ homework station (31%).

Instagram has emerged as the biggest influence on kitchen design dreams, surpassing TV, magazines, and other social media platforms. And when it comes to desirable features within a kitchen, high-end hobs (14%) and built-in wine fridges (13%) top the list.

Deborah Sugg Ryan, TV presenter and Professor Emerita of Design History at the University of Portsmouth, said: “There’s nothing new about kitchen islands, and the idea goes back to the humble farmhouse table in the middle of the kitchen – but there’s no denying it’s now become the nation’s ultimate ‘look at my kitchen’ statement.

“They’re a desirable asset and if it’s done right, it will generally add value to a home. The average kitchen lasts between 10-15 years, and we only tend to change it maybe two or three times in a lifetime.

“The kitchen is a social space which can drive the need for an island, and it’s important to consider the traffic flow – a 90cm clearance around it is generally considered the most effective.

“The golden rule is to allow space around the island and avoid making it too large, which risks a hard-to-reach dead spot centre of an island. There’s nothing worse than a massive island that’s too big for the space – it simply becomes counterproductive.”

Sarah-Jayne Thorne, Wickes design consultant, added: “We’ve seen a big increase in interest for kitchen islands in recent years, and Instagram is now mentioned more than any other influence by customers seeking their dream kitchen.

“Key planning considerations are pendant lighting fixtures that will cover the island, enough electrical outlets and charge points, and ensure the island works alongside the classic ‘kitchen triangle’ principle of oven, sink and fridge. Cutting edge technology is also a consideration for many when designing a kitchen island such as pop-up electrical socks or downdraft cooker hoods for a seamless yet functional look.

“Alternative designs to the traditional countertop are also popular, such as a waterfall finish or alternating the colour of the island cabinets to the rest of the kitchen units for a modern look. Trending upcoming colours and materials include earthy tones and brass, light worktops with heavy patterns, and wood as a feature.

”Maximising space is key to getting the most out of a kitchen island, especially if space is limited. Incorporating hidden bin storage or placing dishwashers and ovens within the kitchen island are a great way to achieve this. This allows for more countertop space for hosting and using the surface for displaying food, such as a giant charcuterie board!”
