On Tuesday 25th June, Lindores Abbey Distillery in Fife is set to release Nectere, a single malt whisky that is matured exclusively in Sherry casks. From the Latin Conectere (to link, to bind, to connect), Nectere unites centuries of knowledge in a single glass, bringing modern whisky-making techniques to the spiritual home of whisky in Scotland.
The new release draws inspiration from the monks who first distilled at the Abbey in 1494, with the evolving tradition of Sherry production from across Spain. The Nectere expression is matured in a combination of four sherry cask types; Oloroso, Pedro Ximénez, Amontillado and Palo Cortado. Designed to deliver depth, colour and complexity, each contributes layers of dark fruit, spice, nuttiness that only the finest Sherry wood can provide.
Oloroso – forms the backbone of the whisky, providing structure, dried fruit and nutty character
Pedro Ximénez – contributes richness, sweetness and enhanced natural colour
Amontillado – adds marmalade notes, roasted nuttiness and lifted aromatics
Palo Cortado – introduces elegance, distinguished balsamic and subtle oxidative notes
The Fife barley used in Nectere is grown on the same land once farmed by the Lindores Abbey monks, creating a quiet but meaningful connection between the landscape, the local farming community, and the whisky itself.
The result is a layered, full-bodied sherry-driven single malt that has a refined complexity. Mahogany in colour, the nose opens with sweet treacle, red apples, vanilla custard cream and cinnamon. On the palate, mellow molasses, chocolate raisins, nutty macaroons, toffee and warming spices unfold with a velvety, beautifully balanced complexity. The finish is long and creamy, with nutmeg and cinnamon lingering at the back of the palate.
Distillery manager, Gary Haggart noted on the launch: “Taking a product such as Nectere from concept to customer is a rare opportunity in our industry. It represents the culmination of immense hard work, creativity, determination and collaboration, while reflecting the very best of us as a team and as a distilleryNectere stands as a testament to what can be achieved when talented people come together with a shared purpose and commitment to excellence.”
Lindores Abbey Distillery will be building new, direct relationships with these modern bodegas as part of a longer-term sourcing strategy, adding a defined layer of Spanish provenance and quality control to the cask programme.
Nectere is priced at £65 (70cl) and will be available for purchase from 25th June.
