As Britons get ready for the busiest social season of the year, M&S reveals the key partywear trends shaping wardrobes for 2025. From high-shine sequins to luxe velvet, lingerie-inspired layers and the ever-popular modern midi, Jessica Rea-Long, creative stylist at M&S shares the looks set to define the season.
This year, shoppers are leaning into celebration more than ever. According to M&S’ latest Customer Pulse insight, more people say they plan to dress up this party season (38%, up from 33% in 2023), highlighting a renewed appetite for joy, escapism and feel-good styling.
1. Lingerie-inspired dressing
Best for: Understated Christmas dinners and dressed-up drinks
“There’s a real shift towards softer, more sensual styling and the line between intimates and outerwear is blurring. Lace-trim camisoles are being styled as tops in their own right, while satin slip skirts have become the modern going-out staple. For Christmas gatherings, pair these pieces with sharp tailoring or cosy knitwear, creating outfits that feel dressed up without being overdone.”
2. The modern midi
Best for: Multi-event days, family Christmas celebrations, daytime-to-evening dressing
“The midi dress remains one of our bestsellers and it’s easy to see why. During party season, whether cut in satin, velvet or a softly draped jersey, midis offer that perfect balance of comfort and polish. Change up the accessories and you also have a completely different look. Try metallic heels and statement earrings for festive nights out, then boots and a cosy knit for Christmas Day.”
3. Luxe velvet
Best for: Opulent evenings and winter celebrations.
“Velvet is a perennial favourite, but this year’s take feels especially refined. We’re seeing rich jewel tones, beautifully plush textures and silhouettes with movement and depth. For Christmas parties, velvet mini dresses and wide-leg trousers are a great choice. They feel instantly put together but remain comfortable enough for a long evening out.”
4. Red, two ways
Best for: Bold party looks and festive statement dressing.
“Red is one of the standout colour stories this season. Burgundy offers a beautifully rich, grown-up option that works brilliantly in satin, velvet and sequins. At the other end of the spectrum, brighter festive reds bring instant energy and confidence. Whether it’s a soft burgundy velvet mini skirt paired with tights and heels or a bright red shift dress, these shades bring instant impact. Keep accessories minimal and let the colour shine.”
5. The sequin statement
Best for: Big festive nights out and end-of-year celebrations
“Sequins always return, but this year they’re taking centre stage, especially for Christmas parties. They’re the easiest way to dial up the festive mood. A sequin midi skirt is perfect for a big night out, while sequin tops and sparkle-trimmed separates work brilliantly for more relaxed Christmas drinks, and can be paired with items you already have in your wardrobe, refreshing of an old outfit.
Why these trends are resonating
“We’re noticing a renewed appetite for joy, glamour and self-expression. The rise in customers saying they’ll dress up this year shows that people want to make the most of the season. Our partywear collection reflects that – elevated pieces you can wear with ease, each designed to help you feel confident and ready to celebrate.”
