Roadchef, one of the UK’s leading motorway service operators, has added six new EV charging bays to its Sandbach North services on the M6 between Junctions 16 and 17 in Cheshire.
The site features six high-powered charging bays served by six ultra-rapid chargers, enabling drivers to top up quickly during longer journeys. The new equipment offers 350kW charging capability with CCS connectors, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of electric vehicles. With power delivery of up to 350kW, drivers can significantly reduce downtime while travelling along the M6.
Located on one of the UK’s busiest motorway corridors, Sandbach North is a key stop for long-distance drivers travelling between the Midlands, North West and Scotland. The new charging bays will help meet growing demand for reliable ultra-rapid charging on a corridor where the number of UK public rapid chargers has already grown 15% in the past year alone.
Delivered using directional drilling techniques, the installation at Sandbach North reflects Roadchef’s approach to futureproofing its EV infrastructure. This method allows charging capacity to be expanded efficiently, supporting long-term network resilience without compromising existing site operations.
Walt Antrim, Head of EV implementation at Roadchef, commented: “Sandbach North plays a key role on the M6, sitting at the heart of one of the UK’s most-travelled north-south routes. As EV adoption accelerates, we’re focused on ensuring drivers have access to fast, reliable charging where it matters most. This new installation strengthens that provision and helps make long-distance electric travel more practical on one of the UK’s busiest routes.”
In addition to the charging facilities, visitors to Sandbach North Services, open 24/7, can take advantage of a range of amenities, including food and drink outlets, dog walking areas, convenience retail, and rest facilities.
With this latest expansion, Roadchef continues to invest in future-ready infrastructure across the strategic road network, helping deliver more accessible and reliable charging facilities for EV drivers nationwide.
