Earlier this month Sainsbury’s announced that its convenience stores achieved sales of £3 billion for the first time, with 12% more customers shopping in Sainsbury’s Locals than in the previous year, and the retailer is continuing its convenience rollout with the opening of its Maghull Central Square Local today in Sefton, Merseyside.

Sudell Ward Councillor Patrick McKinley joined colleagues and customers this morning to cut the ribbon and declare the new 2,582 sq. ft. Sainsbury’s store open. Conveniently located in Central Square alongside a host of other retail and service brands, the new Local will serve and help customers in Maghull from 7am to 11pm seven days a week.

Residents, workers and shoppers in Maghull will now have the opportunity to pick up a bite to eat from Sainsbury’s delicious selection of sandwiches and ‘food to go’, as well as pick up a hot drink from a self-service Costa coffee. Fresh bread and pastries will be baked in the store every day and it will also provide an excellent range of great value, high quality chilled food, fruit and vegetables, along with other grocery and household staples.

Customers will also be able to enjoy the convenience of the new store’s Click and Collect service, which enables them to collect products from the much-loved brands of Argos, Habitat and Tu Clothing while picking up their groceries.

The 17 colleagues that make up the new store team will play an active role in the local community whilst also contributing to Sainsbury’s nationwide charitable programmes and initiatives. For example, over the last year Sainsbury’s has collectively raised over £5.4m for Comic Relief, supporting projects that provide communities with immediate relief from food poverty as well as urgent crisis appeals,

Sainsbury’s also recently reached a major milestone with food donation partner Neighbourly, having worked with the charity to donate its 10 millionth meal to those facing food insecurity in over the last 18 months. Sainsbury’s Maghull Central Square Local will work with local food donation partners via Neighbourly to help ensure that any surplus food from the store goes to those in the community who need it most.

Patrick Dunne, Sainsbury’s property director, said: “Our convenience stores are all about enabling our customers to shop with us when and how they want and I’m delighted this one will offer shoppers in Maghull a new opportunity to do just that. Today’s launch is the first in our plan to invest in opening over 20 more Sainsbury’s Locals in the next year, in response to increasing customer demand.”

Joseph Inchboard, Sainsbury’s Maghull Central Square Local store manager, said: “My team and I have thoroughly enjoyed welcoming our first customers through the doors of our new store today and we look forward to serving and helping many more as we begin to play our part in the local community. We hope customers are as pleased with their new Sainsbury’s store as we are and I’m looking forward to hearing what they think.”
