Small Beer launches Hazy IPA for balanced drinkers to enjoy tropical taste at a session strength

Small Beer has launched its first new beer in two years: Hazy IPA, a juicy session ale that packs in apricot and mango flavours, with around half as much alcohol as most craft beers.

Expertly crafted to a refreshingly sessionable 2.6% ABV, Small Beer Hazy IPA pours sunshine yellow with an alluring haze. A harmony of New World hops conjure ripe aromas of freshly-picked stone fruit and tropical fruit salad, while British malts build full-bodied flavour.

Hazy IPA is naturally low in calories, which means you can enjoy world-class beer while striking the perfect balance. There are only 96 calories in a can of Small Beer Hazy IPA, whereas a can of IPA brewed at 5% ABV will likely contain over 150 calories.

Felix James, co-founder of Small Beer, says: “We have so much confidence in the core Small Beer range that we rarely release new beers, but we were excited by the challenge to brew a New England-style in South Bermondsey that punches well above its weight.”

James adds: “We love brewing with British hops as they have so much to offer, but we knew we had to source something a little more exotic to achieve the juicy flavour and character of a Hazy IPA. We had a lot of fun experimenting in the brewery and chose three punchy US hop varieties: Citra, Mosaic and El Dorado.”

To achieve the beer’s natural haze, the team doubled up on organic oats to build protein. Although still characterised as an IPA, the beer is less bitter than some of the more traditional IPAs. The hefty dry hopping gives it a juicier character and there is a smoother mouthfeel and a subtle sweetness that comes from the distinctive water profile.

Small Beer will launch Hazy IPA on its website on 1 February, starting at £14.25 for 6x330ml cans, and it will be sold through Ocado from March. Visitors to the Small Beer taproom can enjoy Hazy IPA on draught and a limited nuber of 30 litre kegs will be available for trade.

Small Beer last launched a new beer in March 2021 when they delighted session ale lovers with their Organic IPA. Brewed at 2.3% ABV, Small Beer Organic IPA remains a truly unique beer, as it is crafted entirely from organic ingredients grown by British farmers.
