Supporting the future: Aldi’s energy-saving and compliance goals

Supermarket giant Aldi has partnered with phs Compliance to help reduce energy use in all of its stores and ensure electrical safety across its network.

phs Compliance secured a two-year PPM contract with Aldi for all fixed wire, emergency light and PAT testing at its 11 large-scale Regional Distribution Centres across the country, which operate 365 days a year.

It is the latest development in the growing partnership with Aldi and phs Compliance, which also covers fixed wire, emergency lighting and PAT testing obligations in over 1000 of Aldi’s stores and has recently started a large-scale sustainability project for the stores in order to save energy.

phs Compliance is helping Aldi to reduce lighting levels and upgrade lighting fixings across all of its stores in the UK and Ireland as part of the retailer’s sustainability commitment.

Every Aldi store is being upgraded with the latest energy-saving LED lighting by the Compliance team. The new LED lighting extends the lifespan of light fittings in store from two to 10 years and reduces energy use by 10%.

phs Compliance also reduced light levels in each store in order to reduce energy consumption.

In just 10 weeks, phs Compliance completed lux lighting tests across all Aldi stores, lowering lighting levels and dramatically reducing each store’s energy usage with the improvements made.

Lux testing, which measures the amount of light that falls on a surface, is a relatively new concept in UK retail.

A lower lux ensures a lower energy use, which is better for the environment, reducing energy costs and creating a more pleasant shopping environment for customers. The phs Compliance team ensured each of Aldi stores’ lux level was reduced for optimum energy saving.

Richard Conway, real estate director for Aldi, said: “As sustainability is at the heart of everything we do, we need a supply chain that can help match those ambitions. phs Compliance has shown fantastic flexibility and expertise to drive our rollout of LED lighting across our varied store estate.”

Clare Astles from phs Compliance, said: “Aldi is fiercely committed to making changes in how it operates to be ‘fairer, greener and healthier’ and we are enjoying working closely with them on their exciting sustainability journey.

“Our team worked proactively to ensure the project was carried out within Aldi’s timeframe and to the highest standard.

“Our nationwide team are the best in the business. They are very experienced and understand the retail setting like no-one else, so we were able to carry out works within Aldi’s usual with minimum disruption and ensuring safety at all times.

“We are delighted to see our close relationship with Aldi grow and grow as we begin to support its RDC network as well as its stores. We look forward to a positive future as we continue to support Aldi’s energy-saving and compliance needs.”
