Products from online shopping platform Temu have passed an independent safety evaluation conducted by Finland’s respected LUT University. The test, initiated by the newspapers of central Finland without Temu’s involvement, found that all tested items met safety standards.
According to Etelä-Saimaa, the newspapers independently purchased five everyday items — a nail dryer, mobile phone cases, men’s boxer shorts, a lipstick, and a pink piggy bank — for a total of 13.94 euros and submitted them for evaluation. While the lipstick couldn’t be analyzed due to lab limitations, the remaining items cleared safety checks with no issues.
The USB-powered nail dryer kept UV radiation levels low and is certified with the CE safety mark. Chemical tests on the mobile phone cases found no heavy metals. The polyester boxer shorts were deemed safe for everyday use. The pink piggy bank, like many similar toys, could crack if handled roughly, but chemical testing confirmed it was “not dangerous.”
LUT University is known for its expertise in technology and scientific research, including product safety, adding weight to the findings. The newspaper’s independent approach, with no input from Temu, makes the results authoritative.
Temu has been helping households stretch their budgets and make paychecks go further amid an affordability crunch since entering Europe two years ago. Products are sold at lower prices by cutting out layers of middlemen and allowing consumers to buy directly from manufacturers, avoiding the multiple markups typical of traditional retail.
To ensure the safety and quality of products sold by third-party merchants, Temu carries out random spot checks, ongoing monitoring, and swift, decisive takedowns when items are suspected of infringement or failing to meet standards. The platform also works with leading global testing and certification companies like TUV SUD, Intertek, SGS, Eurofins, and Bureau Veritas to help ensure products meet regulatory requirements.
A recent survey by Omnisend found that Temu’s products are, on average, 40% cheaper than similar items sold on Amazon. And many of those products are exactly the same — just with a different price tag.
Shoppers across Europe have been quick to catch on. For many, there’s no reason to pay more for the same quality.
Temu has also earned trust by keeping customer service simple and hassle-free. Returns are straightforward, and Germany’s respected consumer group, Stiftung Warentest, gave Temu its highest rating for service excellence.
