Too Good To Go announces over 100 million meals saved from going to waste in 2023 globally

Too Good To Go, the social impact company behind the world’s largest marketplace for surplus food, has recently published its 2023 Impact Report. The publication highlights a new record: Breaking the 100 million meals saved barrier in just one year by helping to save 121,686,720 meals from going to waste.  

The milestone marks a 46% increase from 2022, reinforcing Too Good To Go as a global leader in the fight against food waste. The environmental impact of saving over 121 million meals in 2023 is equivalent to avoiding 328,554 tonnes of CO2e from entering the Earth’s atmosphere, and nearly 100 billion litres of unnecessary water use.  

Good for people, the planet and businesses 
This achievement demonstrates the success of Too Good To Go’s ‘win-win-win’ business model: Users get access to good food at great value for money; business partners unlock value from their surplus food; and together they make a tangible impact in tackling climate change by reducing food waste.

Innovative solutions to support a rapidly growing community 
According to Project Drawdown (2020), reducing food waste is the number one action individuals can take to help tackle climate change. 

Within just one year, Too Good To Go added 21 million new registered users and 72,000 new active stores to its fight against food waste. As the community grew, the company invested in new products to help save even more food from going to waste via its marketplace app. Last year saw the rollout of Too Good To Go Parcels, and Too Good To Go Platform, two products that reach deeper into the food supply chain to help drive the industry closer to zero waste. 

A new framework to measure environmental impact 
For Too Good To Go it is vital that there are robust and measurable markers in place to assess the environmental impact of its community. 

In order to push the boundaries on the accuracy of the companies non-financial reporting, Too Good To Go commissioned new calculations from Mérieux Nutrisciences | Blonk, a leading international expert in food system sustainability. Their work, independently reviewed by Oxford University and WRAP shows that every meal (1 kg) of food saved from going to waste with Too Good To Go is the equivalent to avoiding: 2.7 kg of CO2e emissions, 2.8 m2 of land use per annum, and 810 litres of water.   

This means that, by helping to save more than 300 million meals from going to waste since 2016, the company has delivered an environmental impact that is equivalent to avoiding 810,000 tonnes of CO2e, 243 billion litres of water use and 840 million m2 of land use per annum.
