What do UK shoppers buy online?

The UK’s online shopping market has hit a record high, with £127.41 billion in sales during 2024, a 3.4% increase from 2023. The record growth, as reported by the Office for National Statistics figures, is the highest on record, bar the increase during the lockdown. Online retailing currently represents 30% of all UK retail sales, a considerable increase from 21.6% in 2019, reflecting the ongoing change in the pattern of consumer buying in this day and age.

Online leisure and online entertainment have experienced incredible growth, emerging as a mainstay of Britain’s digital economy. The gambling industry, especially, has experienced remarkable traction, with the UK Gambling Commission stating that the online Gross Gambling Yield amounted to £1.54 billion alone in Q3 2024, a growth of 21% year-on-year.

This surge reflects a growing appetite for diverse gaming options, including platforms offering greater flexibility and variety. For instance, non-Gamstop slots UK have gained significant traction as players seek alternatives that provide unrestricted access to popular slot games and other casino offerings. These platforms cater to a demand for innovative features, such as higher betting limits and exclusive bonuses, aligning with the broader trend of increased digital entertainment consumption.

Food goods have emerged as the leading category for online shopping, with a whopping £19.45 billion in sales. This tremendous amount proves how British shoppers are turning to ordering groceries online, and this trend has continued to be robust ever since the lockdown. Clothing and textiles are close behind, generating £16.52 billion of online expenditure for 2024, proving the category’s ongoing digital shift.

Home-related purchases have maintained steady popularity, with household items adding £9.09 billion and home furnishing, DIY, and furniture adding £6.69 billion to the market in online stores. Online entertainment through streaming has also done well, with UK home entertainment in total exceeding £5.1 billion for the first time in the industry’s history, as reported by the UK’s Entertainment Retailers Association. Netflix dominates in this category with 59% UK household penetration (17.3 million households), followed by Amazon Prime Video at 46% (13.4 million households).

Holiday buying habits also highlight the ubiquity of online shopping. Approximately 36% of British consumers intend to do most of their Christmas shopping with online stores in 2024. According to YouGov research, the age division also reveals significant differences between age groups, with 46% of the 35-44 age group preferring online retailing compared to 20% of 18-24-year-olds during the festive season.

The growth of mobile-first platforms has also fueled the growth of online entertainment. Customers are increasingly consuming streaming services, gaming sites, and virtual casinos on the move. This trend makes mobile optimisation crucial for e-commerce companies targeting digital entertainment and gambling consumers.

Industry leaders expect further expansion of the UK e-commerce market by 2025, notwithstanding financial limitations such as a rise in National Insurance and growing costs of doing business. Success will rely ever more on clarity of proposition, a deep understanding of customers’ needs, and excellent operational skills.
