The Perfume Shop, the UK’s largest fragrance retailer, is committed to leading the way in recycling initiatives and is continuing its efforts to ensure they are ahead of the game. In celebration of National Recycling Week, taking place from October 14th to 20th this year, NRW is a dedicated campaign that aims to raise awareness about the critical importance of recycling. It encourages individuals, communities, and organisations to take proactive steps toward reducing waste and promoting sustainability. The Perfume Shop is proud to be at the forefront of this vital movement.

Here, The Perfume Shop shares their important initiatives they have in place and how they are continuing to improve within their O+O business structure:

  1. The Perfume Shop continues its marketing leading initiatives with their most extensive perfume bottle recycling service as part of its focus on sustainability and on-going commitment to combat unnecessary perfume bottle wastage.

– The Perfume Shop has seen 7,861 bottles recycled in 2024 thus far compared to 6,813 from January to September in 2023 with a 15% increase within the 209 nationwide stores.

– In June, The Perfume Shop introduced upgraded and improved all units which are now wooden models that are sturdier and have another section included for customers to place their used fragrance blotters in.

– Customers can return their empty perfume bottles to any of the stores and receive 15% off as a thank you to redeem in store on same day purchases.

– The Perfume Shop has several ways they reuse returned bottles which include repurposing bottles by creating chandeliers in their stores or with support from recycling partners, The Perfume Shop will dispose of perfume bottles in the most environmentally friendly way.

– Continued data reveals that refillable fragrances are growing +23% (compared to +9% for non-refillable fragrances) as environmentally conscious consumers choose more sustainable options. This market leading initiative further increases the distribution of perfume refills and widens the choice of perfumes available to refill in-store.

  1. Continued partnership’s are key for The Perfume Shop such as Veritree. For every bottle recycled, The Perfume Shop pledge to plant a tree with veritree who verify the trees they are planting and where they are planted.

– As part of this ongoing partnership, The Perfume Shop and veritree have a hub on their website which will educate their customers with an interactive map on where the trees are planted as well as a rolling total of how many trees have been planted.

– The Perfume Shop’s ongoing mission is to make the planet a greener, more environmentally friendly place to live. Since working alongside tree planting partners from April 2021, 475,395 trees have been planted as a result of customers bringing their empty perfume bottles back to stores and other initiatives through the years.

  1. In 2024 The Perfume Shop has introduced over 31 of its new, modernised, experiential stores across the UK and Ireland, with 3 more planned before the end of the year – the most comprehensive investment into its store estate. – Investment in the stores, included new open layouts, upgraded services and digital screens. Existing materials and equipment are retained or reused as a priority.
    – The stores continued to benefit from energy efficient LED lighting throughout, which contributes to The Perfume Shop’s commitment to reducing its energy consumption by 30% by 2030 vs 2015.
    – The extensive expansion of these new refitted stores will continue into 2025 with around 40 more refits planned.

4. The Perfume Shop further accelerated its commitment to reducing environmental impact with their automated packing machines.

– The Perfume Shop invested £2.5M in automated packaging machines to further accelerate its commitment to reducing the environmental impact of its outbound supply chain.

– The packing machines are able to fold boxes to the correct size of the content included, reducing the overall cardboard and parcel size. Not only this, but the cardboard used is made in the UK and is 90% recyclable.

– With these innovations in place, it means a reduction in reduced carbon emissions as less delivery trucks will be required on the road.
