evian continues drive for circular economy with next step on refill and reuse journey at The Championships, Wimbledon

evianevian, the Official Water of The Championships, together with The All England Lawn Tennis Club, is aiming to make refillable evian more accessible, in a bid to encourage more than half a million spectators to join the refill and reuse movement at Wimbledon.

Moving towards a circular packaging model – increasing recycling rates, using recycled materials, enabling and promoting refill and reuse – is a key priority for Danone as it strives to meet its carbon commitments.

As the market leader in the waters category, evian continues to pioneer new ways of delivering water more sustainably, including through its innovative natural mineral water refill solutions at Wimbledon.

For the first time, evian will be replacing its iconic 750ml bottle with a new icon – a bottle which is recycled*, recyclable, and refillable. Marking a step change in its circular packaging ambitions.

This builds on the success of refill innovations at Wimbledon in recent years, and underscores evian’s continued support of The Championship’s sustainability goals.

Rachael Hann, Danone UK & Ireland category director for beverages, said: “At Danone, we’re incredibly proud of our long-standing partnership with one of the world’s most prestigious sporting events, and even more proud to be supporting Wimbledon in achieving its sustainability goals.

“We strive to offer healthy hydration in the most sustainable way possible. Embracing a circular packaging model is central to that mission.

“Following the success of our refill solutions for players and spectators in 2023 and 2024, we’ve taken the learnings and insights from consumer behaviour to deliver the best and most sustainable possible solution. This is because we strongly believe in a test-and-learn approach to drive meaningful change.

“This year, we’re delighted to deliver the next innovation in our Wimbledon refill initiative, and we hope we will see even more guests join the refill and reuse movement at The Championships.”

Hannah Cornick, Danone UK & Ireland head of sustainability and social impact, said: “We have committed to cutting our global carbon footprint by approximately 35% by 2030 as part of our 1.5 SBTi aligned, carbon reduction journey.

“Transitioning to a circular packaging model – especially through the use of recycled and reusable materials – is a key step in reducing carbon emissions.

“We’ve already achieved 100% recycled* plastic bottles across the evian portfolio, which has had a significant impact given recycled plastic is one of the most carbon efficient materials currently available. We are excited to trial this new bottle, designed specifically for refill and made from 100% recycled plastic, at Wimbledon this year.”

Danone has publicly called for the implementation of a Deposit Return Scheme in the UK without further delay, to increase lagging recycling rates. It also supports Extended Producer Responsibility for packaging to better enable the collection, processing and reuse.

Hattie Park, sustainability manager at The All England Lawn Tennis Club, said: “Our aim is to have, and advocate for, a positive environmental impact through a range of measures including being more resource efficient and using our influence to inspire wider action.

“Evian has been such a positive partner for us on this journey, and we are so proud to be one of the first events in the world to offer evian via refill. It really is testament to our shared circularity ambitions.

“We’re delighted to once again be working with evian to make it easier and more convenient for our guests to refill and reuse. Its brilliant to be taking another meaningful step towards reducing our environmental impact and promoting more sustainable behaviours across the Grounds.”

Catherine David, chief executive officer, WRAP, said: “Every year in England, Northern Ireland and Scotland we buy an estimated 30 billion single-use drinks containers, including 12 billion plastic drinks bottles and 13 billion cans. Recycling means many are remanufactured, but around 6.5 billion bottles and cans go to waste. Recycling alone is not the answer to our disposable culture. People want solutions to reduce our plastic waste, but which still allow us to enjoy the products we buy. Circular Living models strike a better balance between nature and commerce.

“Expanding its mineral water refill scheme at Wimbledon shows such systems are effective at reducing waste at events, and popular. Crucially, Evian’s refill programme includes ALL bottles so you can use one you already have. We need similar schemes at all major events. I’ll have my trusty refill with me – let the refill revolution begin.”

Staying hydrated with evian refill will be even more accessible and convenient at this year’s Championships, as spectators will be able to choose how they refill. They can opt to either refill their own bottle, or the new evian bottle, designed specifically for refill, throughout their day. All at an accessible price point.

As the Official Water of The Championships since 2008, evian and Wimbledon are committed partners in a joint sustainability journey. In recent years, we have delivered innovations, big and small, designed to reduce plastic packaging waste at The Championships and support our understanding of what could be delivered to support sustainability goals.

The Championships will be staged from Monday 30 June to Sunday 13 July 2025.
