British Pie Week, the annual celebration of all things pastry, is just around the corner.
Running from 2-8 March, it’s the perfect excuse to indulge in some golden-crusted goodness.
Here we outline some of the best pies on offer according to the Guild of Fine Food, the organisation behind Great Taste: the most well-recognised and widely respected food and drink accreditation scheme in the world.
Each of these offerings holds a valid Great Taste 3-star rating, which means it has been put through its paces in a blind-tasting judging process by a panel of industry experts and been found to be faultless, extraordinarily tasty and exemplary. Our judges’ thoughts are below.
Organic Chicken, Leek & Tarragon Pie from Brassica Dorset, Beaminster
A very attractive pie, with a stylishly homemade look. Generously filled with delicious chicken and a well-balanced sauce. The pastry is soft, yet has held its structure well, with lovely flaky layers. The aroma is mouthwatering, the finish is balanced and the seasoning is spot on. Texturally, there was the perfect amount of sauce with a lovely little crunch left in the leeks, a wonderful buttery flavour with just a hint of tarragon.
Porcini & Chestnut Mushroom Pie from Higgidy, Callington
A showstopper of a mushroom pie – beautifully crafted with a crisp crust and a lovely crumble topping. The filling is rich, glossy and generous, well balanced and full of flavour. The aroma is earthy and truffle-y followed by an equally rich and savoury taste. The flavour of the mushrooms swoops in, but harmonises perfectly with the creamy sauce.
Steak & Blackstick Blue Pie from Wagtail Kitchen, Kendal
A meat-lover’s pie, deep filled and with a rich aroma. The perfect, flaky, buttery pastry complements the rich umami gravy, tender steak and creamy, salty cheese. The flavour is delicious, the deep brown, meaty gravy is well seasoned and has plenty of depth. There is a good filling to pie ratio, so full of tender meat it feels ready to burst.
Malaysian Spiral Potato Curry Puff from Sueperlicious Bakery, London SW8
Moreish and dangerously delicious, these little pies look great and have astonishing depth of flavour with perfect pastry. The filling has a lovely creamy consistency and the level of spicing balances well with the sweet potato and coconut. The heat builds slowly and the flavour develops pleasantly. A great vegetarian choice.
“Mr Williams’s” Traditional Pork Pie from Wyre Pie Company, Tenbury Wells
This generously sized pie is stunningly presented with a gorgeous golden finish and charming decoration. The meat has a good coarse texture with a confident blend of seasoning. It’s a very skilfully crafted pie, not too dry and with a firm bite. The jelly is sweet, juicy and just rich enough to add further satisfaction to the flavour. The overall eating experience is very special.
