The Weston family must prioritise health expertise and store investment to drive growth at Boots, says GlobalData

Following the announcement that the Weston family has agreed to acquire Boots from Sycamore Partners; Charlotte Chilcott, retail analyst at GlobalData, a leading intelligence and productivity platform, offers her view: “Boots is a strong, profitable business with genuine headroom for growth under the right stewardship. The Weston family brings a proven track record of enhancing retail businesses through investment and long-term ownership, such as their sustained operation and development of Shoppers Drug Mart across Canada as a leading pharmacy-led health and beauty retailer. The new owners should focus on refurbishing the full store estate and leveraging Boots’ health expertise to deliver a more consistent experience for consumers and sustainable growth for the business.

“Boots is uniquely strong in both health and beauty, setting the business apart from rivals such as Sephora and Space NK which focus exclusively on beauty. The Westons should leverage Boots’ reputation as a health expert, reinvesting in the pharmacy and health side of the business which has been deprioritised relative to beauty expansion. The Westons have proven they can position health expertise as a competitive differentiator through their operation of Shoppers Drug Mart in Canada. Applying this model to Boots, investing in more trained health advisors and enhanced clinical services, will bolster Boots’ health credentials and support revenue growth, whilst maintaining its growing beauty proposition. With increasing consumer demand for self-care, wellness and health-driven beauty, Boots is well positioned to capture growth across both categories.

“Store portfolio consistency should be another core focus. Flagship stores and larger locations have been revamped, but Boots operates a large network of smaller stores that have not seen the same level of investment and remain visually outdated. This inconsistency damages brand perception and frustrates shoppers. A disciplined programme to modernise smaller stores, by aligning design, merchandising and experience with flagship standards, will lift the brand image across the entire portfolio. This will mean a more consistent, pleasant shopping experience for consumers and drive traffic for the business in stores that currently underperform.
