As more than 300,000+ 18-year-olds prepare to fly the nest this September, Gen Z is often seen as total pros when it comes to tech and gadgets. However, new research from Currys reveals they might be heading for an “adulting wipeout” when it comes to using basic household appliances.

The only gadgets their parents say they’re truly confident with? The trusty microwave and air fryer!

The Struggle is Real. That’s why Currys, the UK’s largest tech retailer, has revamped one of their user guides with vibes that hits different.

Currys very own TikTok sensation ‘George’ is helping to address the biggest concerns from parents with his ‘how to use a washing machine’ guide, translating boring, ‘dead’ and ‘wet’ household tech into something Gen Z can vibe with – its low key lit.

Enter viral sensation ‘George,’ who’s turning instruction manuals from ‘ick’ to ‘sick’ with his relatable swagger. With 200K views in just 48-hours, Geoge is saying less in his clearing the filter’ era. Bro got caught in 4k! The video hits big when the spin goes wild “This drum lowkey ate though. Zero crumbs. No notes. The way it spins is sending me! On God though, at Currys we here for this. ‘Cause let’s keep it a buck – not knowing your washing machines is a major red flag. I am hype.”

Top stats:

  • 75% of Dads worry about how their kids will keep their living space clean, compared to only 59 per cent of mums.
  • Some dads are taking matters into their own hands, with over a fifth (22%) planning to buy their kid smart tech like robot vacuums to help them stay on top of the mess when they move out. Only 14% of mums feel the need to invest in fancy gadgets, perhaps preferring their kids to figure it out the hard way!
  • Whilst 94% of parents are fully confident their kids can handle nuking their meals with a microwave, 49% have some concern about the hob situation.
  • But let’s not forget the ultimate kitchen gadget: the air fryer. With 59% of parents backing their kids to be air fryer pros, it’s the culinary GOAT.

Whether you’re after an air fryer for those midnight snacks or need a crash course in Laundry 101, Currys is pulling out all the stops to ensure Gen Z students have everything they need to thrive on campus. No more dank drying aura, chat. We ‘bout to go on a hot girl walk!

The Currys ShopLive service hooks you up with tech pros through video calls, so it’s like FaceTiming that one friend who’s totally clued up on gadgets. And the best part? You can do it all from your sofa. Calm.

What’s more, Currys online tech guides are packed with easy-to-follow tips on how to master any home tech, so you can say goodbye to laundry disasters and hello to spotless digs.

Currys category director, Lara Britain, commented: “Gen Z might run the digital game, but when it comes to handling home tech, 16-18-year-olds are still figuring it out.

To do our bit to help, as thousands of UK teens prep for uni life, Currys has given their user manual – how to use a washing machine – a TikTok glow-up with someone Gen Z can actually vibe with.”
