Leading Georgian winery, Tbilvino, announces the UK launch of its flagship premium wine collection, available through Berkmann Wine Cellars. The range features the ‘King of Georgian grapes’ Saperavi Twin Vineyards 2022, and the amber wine, Qvevris Kisi 2022.
Crafted from specially selected grapes grown in the esteemed Vachnadziani (planted 2015) and Shashiani (planted 2019) vineyards, these wines showcase Georgia’s distinct terroir. Shashiani’s meadow-brown, stony, moderately fertile soil and Vachnadziani’s unique mix of rich and rocky terrain create wines with intriguing tastes, robust aromas, and exquisite colour.
George Margvelashvili, executive director of Tbilvino, says: “These wines represent a bold new concept for Tbilvino, they embody our company’s vision and dedication to crafting exceptional wines that reflect the rich diversity of Georgian winemaking heritage. We are confident that these wines will resonate with UK consumers seeking unique and high-quality wine experiences.”
Georgia, the “birthplace of wine,” boasts an 8,000-year winemaking history and over 500 indigenous grape varieties. With nearly 120 million bottles exported globally last year and a 14th-place ranking at the International Wine Challenge[1], Georgian wine is experiencing a surge in popularity. This, combined with 98% of Brits open to trying new wines, creates the perfect environment for Tbilvino’s premium range.
Saperavi Twin Vineyards (£15.50, 75cl) – Crafted from Tbilvino’s finest Saperavi grapes, this wine showcases prominent Saperavi aromas with notes of blackcurrant, dried black plum, ripe cherry, and blackberry. The palate reveals a distinct character balanced with elegant, ripe, velvety tannins and a long finish.
Qvevris Kisi (£20.44, 75cl) – This golden, full-bodied wine captures the essence of its vineyard’s unique soil and climate. Abundant with dried yellow fruit flavours, it presents captivating aromas of quince, peach, and apricot, delighting the palate with ripe, velvety, well-balanced tannins.
Hand-picked in the cool early mornings of late September to minimise mechanical impact, the grapes are fermented for up to four months in qvevri, traditional Georgian clay vessels. This ancient practice, central to Georgian winemaking, has become a global trend, with winemakers worldwide now embracing the qvevri method.
