Independent brunch favourite Federal to open cafe in York

FederalIndependent brunch brand Federal is set to open a new cafe in York this autumn, bringing its signature all-day brunch, speciality coffee and warm, welcoming service to the city. It will be Federal’s fifth location.

Founded in Manchester in 2014 and inspired by the neighbourhood cafes of Australia and New Zealand, Federal has built a loyal following for its standout brunch dishes, expertly crafted coffee and warm hospitality. At the heart of the brand is its signature ‘Sunny Side Service’ ethos, which aims to ensure every guest leaves feeling even better than when they arrived, bringing a little sunshine to even the greyest of days.

Federal, which was named the UK’s most popular independent cafe, operates three venues in Manchester and opened its first Yorkshire site in Leeds in December last year. The brand was also ranked fourth globally, generating more than 1.1 million TikTok views and nearly 400,000 annual Google searches, cementing its status as a leading name on the international brunch scene.

Customers in York can expect the same Federal experience already enjoyed by diners in Manchester and Leeds with a core menu featuring Federal favourites, alongside seasonal food and drink specials that change regularly throughout the year. Quality is central to Federal’s well-earned reputation, with the team making as much as possible in-house and working with leading independent suppliers wherever possible.

Located on Coney Street within a Grade II listed building, the cafe’s interior will combine Federal’s familiar warm and relaxed style with the character of the historic property. Original brickwork and heritage features will be retained and celebrated as part of the design.

The 100-cover venue will also feature a large outdoor area and a second level offering additional seating, as well as the potential to host private hires and events.

The expansion forms part of a £3 million investment from Foresight Group to support Federal’s national rollout strategy.

Federal founder Claudio Ribeiro said: “York feels like a natural fit for Federal. It has a strong independent spirit, a huge student community and a thriving food and drink scene, alongside an incredible year-round visitor economy.

“We’re incredibly lucky to have found a fantastic location and we’re excited to create something that feels unmistakably Federal while celebrating the history and character of the building.

“York will give customers everything they know and love about Federal with amazing brunches, top-quality speciality coffee and five-star service. Our people are fundamental to the energy and personality of our cafes, and we’re looking forward to building a brilliant team in York.”

Fit-out work at the Coney Street venue is due to begin in late September, ahead of its planned opening later this year.
