Just Eat to launch first-of-a-kind AI Voice Assistant

Just Eat has today unveiled a pioneering AI Voice Assistant on iOS and Android, designed to make ordering on Just Eat easier than ever before.

Launching first in the UK ahead of Just Eat’s global markets, this industry-leading technology allows customers to bypass menus and simply have a conversation to discover not only new cuisines, restaurants and dishes, but also everything else Just Eat has to offer including pharmacy, beauty and electrical products.

With the endless choice offered by Just Eat’s 100,000 partners comes the challenge of “choice overload” with research showing Brits increasingly face “decision fatigue”. The innovative AI Voice Assistant has been designed specifically to tackle this, acting as a personal ‘delivery concierge’ that offers tailored recommendations based on genuine interaction and speeds up the process of placing an order.

Using the latest AI technology, the assistant is designed to understand what people are trying to ask, no matter how loosely or informally they phrase it, meaning customers can think out loud about what they want for dinner and the assistant will still provide meaningful and relevant recommendations by evaluating the potential intent based on the user’s natural conversation. Whether a customer’s request is a precise order for a Gregg’s sausage roll, or a rambling stream of consciousness that suggests they may want a local poke bowl, the assistant cuts through the noise to deliver accurate, meaningful answers.

Capable of processing in dozens of languages, the assistant’s launch also reflects the growing role of voice technology in everyday decision-making, with UK consumers increasingly turning to spoken interaction to find information and support their choices. Research from Ofcom shows that nearly two fifths (38%) of households with smart speakers already use them to search for answers to questions.

Today’s roll out follows weeks of trials with volumes of conversations increasing everyday and a significantly higher conversion rate for users who utilise the AI Voice Assistant.

Empowering accessibility through blended interaction

The AI Voice Assistant is integrated with Just Eat’s existing chat function, introducing a blended interaction mode that allows customers to move seamlessly between voice and touch commands. By reducing the need for constant screen focus, the feature enhances convenience for all users while materially improving accessibility for people with limited mobility or visual impairments, reinforcing Just Eat’s commitment to designing inclusive technology.

Mert Öztekin, chief technology officer at Just Eat, commented: “We are always innovating and continually focused on leveraging technology to improve the ordering journey for our millions of customers. This custom-built conversational assistant represents a major step forward, making our service more intuitive and accessible.”
