Poundland in New Year value drive as it beats 30-year inflation trend

Poundland this week will take the next major step in delivering on its promise of amazing value to customers, increasing the number of core items at £1 or below from around 1,500 to almost 2,400 in all its UK stores.

And when you also add in significant ‘When it’s gone, it’s gone’ clearance items from its January sale, there’s now over 4,000 products in a typical Poundland at £1 or below.

And the discounter will also deliver over 200 more jaw-dropping savings through its new app, Poundland Perks – which has already hit 2.2m downloads and updates in the space of just eight weeks with approaching a million weekly active users.

Across Poundland’s typical core range of around 5,000 items, around a half will be £1 or less, reinforcing Poundland’s position, as the home of the pound.

What’s even more remarkable is, according to the Bank of England inflation calculator, the value of a pound in 1990 when Poundland opened its first store, would be the equivalent of £2.42 today.

In stores, new lower prices can be found on everything from batteries to bleach and bread to Biscoff biscuits.

What’s more outside of grocery, there’s significant price drops on Poundland’s home ranges which are available in all of its 800-plus stores.

For example, a 38cm table mat is reduced to £1.00 from £2.50, a drawstring laundry bag is reduced from £2.50 to £1.00 and a three-piece tea towel set is cut from £2.50 to £1.00.

Essential home décor items such as a rib glass soap dispenser, 2-pack picture frames and a glass vase are all available for £1 with significant price reductions.

Outside of its £1 or below ranges, there are also significant savings on other home items, including a 180 x 220cm beige velvet bedspread halved in price from £20.00 to £10.00, a bamboo cutlery drawer organiser halved in price from £12.00 to £6.00 and a coffee table hyacinth reduced from £15.00 to £7.00.

There’s also significant reductions in Poundland’s clothing departments which can be found in most of its stores.  Those price drops include kids and baby clothing that now start from £1.50, women and men’ t-shirts which can be found from £2.00 and women’s sweatshirts, knitwear, denim and dresses from just £5.00.

And through its Perks app, customers are being invited to perk up their pounds with additional savings that go beyond the everyday low prices that can be found on Poundland’s shelves.

For this first time those Perks offers also include its chilled and frozen food ranges – now in the majority of its stores – that will see app users get some hot savings.

For example, McCain microchips (4 pack), already at an amazing price of £2.00 will be £1.50 with a 50p perk voucher, a Chicago Town Twin cheese pizza just £1.50 with a 25p perks voucher and a 145g Rustlers hot dog is just £1.00 with a £25p perks voucher.

There are other reductions on scores of grocery, household and health and beauty ranges alongside of the extension of perks points across the whole store until at least mid-January.

The latest price reductions build on significant moves made by Poundland before Christmas which saw key everyday essentials such as milk, bread, sugar and eggs all reduced to a locked price of £1 and the introduction of new £1 fresh produce stands in over 520 stores offering key items such as apples and oranges.

Poundland commercial director CJ Antal-Smith said: “According to the Bank of England, Poundland should be £2.42-land today, based on the way inflation has risen since it opened its first store 35 years ago.

“But Poundland is all about defying inflation and delivering amazing value and our customers are being very clear that they need us to be at our best in 2025 in the face of continued pressure on household budgets.

“We know that’s our job, and we’ll do all we can to deliver the promise of amazing value on the items they need.”
