Sainsbury’s launches new £5.45 Bordeaux that proves great wine doesn’t need a premium price tag

Sainsbury’sBordeaux has long been regarded as one of the world’s most prestigious wine regions, yet many assume quality comes with a hefty price tag. Now, a new arrival at Sainsbury’s is challenging that perception.

Exclusively available at Sainsbury’s and retailing for just £5.45, CH Pierre Bordeaux proves shoppers don’t need to spend £15 or more to enjoy an authentic Bordeaux. This wine delivers the hallmark flavours of France’s most famous wine region at an everyday price.

Crafted from a blend of 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc, CH Pierre is fresh and fruit-forward, offering ripe red and black fruit layered with subtle spice, a balanced palate, smooth tannins and a long finish. Made from grapes from the Entre-Deux-Mers region, the wine blends traditional winemaking with modern techniques to create a style that’s approachable, vibrant and ready to enjoy now.

For many consumers, Bordeaux still conjures images of expensive bottles reserved for special occasions. However, today’s Bordeaux is increasingly focused on producing wines that are approachable, fruit-driven and perfect for everyday enjoyment.

The range will expand further in November with the launch of CH Pierre Réserve, also exclusively at Sainsbury’s and priced at £7.50. Offering shoppers a step-up option within the CH Pierre range while remaining firmly below £10, the new Réserve will provide another accessible way to explore Bordeaux at an everyday price point.

“CH Pierre is a prime example of this modern style, delivering the elegance and power Bordeaux is famous for while remaining juicy and smooth, accessible and exceptional value for money,” says Vanessa Mills, Winemaker, CH Pierre.

While Malbec has become the go-to choice for many summer barbecues, CH Pierre offers a fresher, simpler alternative. Served lightly chilled at around 14–16°C, it becomes an effortlessly refreshing red for warm evenings in the garden or relaxed alfresco dining.

As the weather cools and dishes become richer, CH Pierre’s Merlot-led fruit, gentle spices and balanced structure give it enough expression and body to pair beautifully with cosy autumn suppers and winter evenings by the fire.

That versatility carries through to the festive season, when CH Pierre makes an easy match for festive fayre. Its ripe fruit and smooth tannins also make it a natural bottle to bring out with a Boxing Day spread of cold meats, pâté and mature cheeses. And at just £5.45, it offers an affordable way to keep plenty of Bordeaux on hand for Christmas gatherings and unexpected guests.

With household budgets still stretched, shoppers are increasingly seeking products that deliver top quality without premium prices. CH Pierre demonstrates that authentic Bordeaux can be both remarkably versatile and exceptional value.

“CH Pierre demonstrates that outstanding Bordeaux doesn’t need to be expensive. While offering a contemporary Bordeaux signature through classic and modern French winemaking and typical Bordeaux grape varieties (and terroir), this wine delivers impressive drinkability. We are proud to offer greater choice for consumers to discover more wines at this price,” adds Mills.
