New research has revealed that Brits are rethinking their interior design choices as their personal tastes evolve.
The study of 2,000 Brits, conducted by Sofology as part of its Sofological Studies report, revealed that 72% of Brits have admitted they want to change their home’s interiors and almost a quarter (23%) say this is due to a shift in personal style.
As a result, consumers are increasingly looking to future-proof their interiors by choosing staple furniture pieces that can adapt as trends come and go. In fact, Sofology has spotted searches for ‘where to buy a quality sofa’ have soared by 100% in the past year, indicating many are looking to find a sofa that stands the test of time.
To help homeowners get this balance right, Julia Bilotta, interior design expert at Sofology, has shared their top tips on choosing a sofa designed to stand the test of time and future trends.
“Investing in the right sofa for you is a smart starting point when it comes to designing your space. As the largest and most frequently used piece in the living room, a well-chosen sofa provides a durable foundation that allows homeowners to refresh their space through interchangeable accessories and soft furnishings instead.”
Julia Bilotta, Creative stylist at Sofology, has revealed her top tips for choosing a sofa that gives you the freedom to update your home whenever inspiration strikes:
1. Decide how you like to lounge
Before thinking about trends or aesthetics, it’s important to consider how you actually use your living room day to day. Whether you love to stretch out for movie nights, host guests, or need space for the whole family to relax, understanding your practical needs is key to choosing a sofa you’ll love long-term.
Those who prioritise comfort may prefer deep seats, plush cushions or chaise and corner designs, while more structured sofas may suit formal living spaces or smaller rooms. Getting this balance right ensures your sofa remains functional as your style evolves, acting as a reliable foundation no matter how often you update accessories and décor.
2. Choose a versatile base colour
Neutral doesn’t mean boring, it means adaptable. Opting for a neutral base also allows the sofa to evolve alongside your taste.
Soft greys, warm beiges, muted browns, classic creams, and even understated blush or dusty pink tones can create a timeless foundation that will effortlessly adapt to changing interior styles. It will be a quiet constant in the room, grounding the space without dominating it.
These hues sit comfortably within everything from mid-century modern and contemporary minimalism, making them far more future-proof than bold, trend-led colours.
3. Let accessories do the seasonal and trendy tweaks
With nearly a third of Gen Z (29%) citing seasonal transitions as one of their top reasons for refreshing their home, flexibility has become a key priority in interior design. Rather than making big furniture changes, accessories offer a practical way to update a space in line with the seasons and trends.
From warm, cosy reds and greens in winter to brighter pinks and yellows in spring, scatter cushions can be used to introduce new colours and patterns, instantly shifting the tone of a neutral sofa.
Chunky textured throws will add depth and softness in the colder months, allowing for easy layering, and can be swapped out for lighter fabrics as colour palettes and seasons change.
4. Consider modular designs for evolving spaces
For homes that evolve through different life stages, modular sofas offer an added layer of flexibility. Individual sections can be added, removed or repositioned over time, allowing the sofa to respond to everyday needs. This adaptability makes modular sofas an ideal choice for growing households, renters or anyone who wants a layout that can change without replacing key furniture.
So, whether you’re reworking your layout, adding extra seating or adapting the space to suit changing needs, modular designs allow homeowners to reconfigure their sofa without starting from scratch.
