Spar Enham AlameinRecognition for over 25 years of dedication to rural retail and community service SPAR Enham Alamein in Hampshire has been named Best Village Shop & Post Office for the South East in the prestigious Countryside Alliance Awards, which celebrate outstanding rural businesses across the UK.

The store, operated by Leslie Barry and her partner Tim Francis, has served as a vital hub for the village of Enham Alamein for more than 25 years. Open seven days a week, from 7am to 7pm, the SPAR store and Post Office offer far more than daily essentials – playing a central role in community life, particularly for elderly and vulnerable residents.

In awarding the win, judges praised the store as a “cornerstone of the community,” highlighting its strong support for local suppliers, access to fresh produce, and inclusive service ethos. The store’s commitment to going the extra mile – from hosting community events to offering helpful advice at the post office counter – was cited as a model for rural retail excellence.

“Their shop is like an Aladdin’s cave full of goods for both one’s daily needs and for wonderful gifts,” said the judging panel. “Their win is a well-deserved recognition of their commitment to sustaining and enhancing rural life.”

Leslie Barry said: “We really felt it was important to take up the mantle when we were nominated because our amazing customers had taken the time to put us forward for the award. We’ve had overwhelming support from the whole village.

“We’re now looking forward to attending the House of Lords event on 18th June, where the overall national winners will be announced. It’s a real privilege to be part of such a passionate and hardworking community of rural retailers.”

The Countryside Alliance Awards – often referred to as the “Rural Oscars” – honour those who go the extra mile for their customers and communities, with categories recognising local food, enterprise, and public services across the UK.

Steve Thomas, sales and recruitment director Interim at Appleby Westward and Spar South West, added: “Leslie and Tim’s well-deserved recognition reflects the dedication and community spirit at the heart of Spar’s rural stores. We wish them the very best at the national finals next month.”
