Too Good To Go saves 40 million Surprise Bags since UK launch

Too Good To Go, the social impact company behind the world’s largest marketplace for surplus food, has hit its next big milestone: saving an incredible 40 million Surprise Bags from going to waste.

The news follows the announcement in January this year that the company had saved 30 million Surprise Bags in the UK.

Food waste has a huge impact on the planet, accounting for 10% of human-caused greenhouse gas emissions globally. In the UK, 10.7 million tonnes of food is wasted every year, which costs the nation an estimated £21.8 billion annually.

Showing just how far the business has come in reducing food waste and its impact on the environment, these 40 million Surprise Bags have avoided the equivalent CO2e emissions of 18,770 flights around the world.

When it comes to being sustainable, many Britons are conscious of environmental behaviours such as recycling and reducing single-use plastic, yet are less aware of the impact of their food waste on the planet. For comparison, these 40 million Surprise Bags saved by our users are equivalent to:

  • The amount of water use that it would take to fill 12,790 Olympic swimming pools.
  • More than 1,035 years of hot showers.
  • The amount of land use it takes to build 429,333 tennis courts.

Launched in 2016, Too Good To Go now has over 155,000 active partners globally – from supermarkets and independent stores, to cafés, bakeries and restaurants – with over 40,000 of those having signed up to sell their surplus food in the UK, including the likes of Aldi, Greggs, Costa, Morrisons, EG Group and many more.

These partners have been fundamental in helping the company achieve this incredible milestone.

Across the UK, Too Good To Go partners with some of the biggest names in grocery and convenience retail, including SPAR, ALDI, Nisa, Regional Co-op and many more. Via the Too Good To Go app, Surprise Bags can be purchased for 50% of their retail value or less, helping users save money and helping retailers generate revenue and footfall.

Earlier this year, the company announced its Too Good To Go Platform, a modular end-to-end surplus food management solution enabling grocery retailers, from hypermarkets to convenience stores, to unlock value from excess inventory.

Powered by AI, the Too Good To Go Platform seamlessly tracks and helps to redistribute surplus food and is the only system of its kind, thanks to its integration with the world’s largest consumer marketplace for surplus food.
