TV sales soar as England books World Cup quarter-final spot

This year’s summer of sport has sent TV sales soaring according to one of the nation’s biggest online electrical retailers.

New data from AO.com revealed TV sales were up 23% year-on-year throughout June, with demand rising as England continue to impress at this summer’s World Cup.

The latest figures come after millions of supporters tuned in to watch England confirm their place in the last eight with a nail-biting win over Mexico in the early hours of Monday morning.

That result has set up a quarter final showdown with Norway this weekend, and the retailer says it’s set for even more interest from fans keen to upgrade their home TV and AV setups ahead of the fixture.

With many kick off times falling in the early hours, the appetite for watching from home is clear too with an AO TV survey revealing 38% of football fans would rather watch the tournament on a high-quality TV at home than be in a stadium. Almost one in three (31%) also admitted they were planning their ‘entire social calendar’ around this summer’s fixtures.

Nick Bunce, TV expert at AO.com, said: “With lots of England’s games kicking off at awkward times, many fans have been choosing to watch from the comfort of their own homes rather than heading out.

“Iconic events like this are a fantastic reason for people to invest in their TV and AV set ups at home, and that’s why we’ve seen massive demand for TVs as well as sound bars and other products too.

“With England now through to the quarter-finals, we expect demand to keep growing ahead of Saturday’s clash with Norway.”
