What is needed if you want to switch to cloud platform Azure?

Do you work a lot with outdated systems? Then it may feel as if you are often mainly busy solving problems. Think, for example, of outdated servers, software that has passed its prime or a messy IT environment. All of this creates extra workload and security risks. For that reason, more and more organizations choose to use a cloud platform like Azure. At first, moving to Azure cloud can seem complex, because you need to adjust both your way of working and your existing systems. Yet it is ultimately worth the effort, because you can work more safely and efficiently.

When is it really time to switch to the cloud?

At a certain point, many organizations notice that their IT environment no longer meets their needs. For example, because many systems are outdated or because the current servers are difficult to scale up at times when it is busier. If you notice that the systems are less reliable or no longer working as efficiently, it is wise not to postpone the switch to the cloud for too long. By switching to Azure in time, your organization will be able to work more future proof and you can prevent larger problems such as outages or even a data breach.

Good preparation is essential

If you move to Azure, it is wise to start with good preparation. First map out which software you are using and which data must not be lost. In addition, it is a good idea to check which software is truly outdated and which data is, for example, stored twice. This gives you a better picture of which data and software you want to move and what you no longer need to keep. Also determine how flexible and scalable the new environment needs to be. By preparing the migration in this way, it becomes easier to draw up a suitable step by step plan.

Different ways to move software to the cloud

Good to know is that there are different ways to move software to Azure. Some programs can be transferred to the cloud almost without adjustments. Other applications require small adjustments, and for some software it is actually better to redevelop it completely. In addition, you can sometimes choose to replace outdated software with modern SaaS solutions. It is therefore wise to assess per application what the best approach is: simply moving it, adjusting something, completely rebuilding it or replacing it with modern alternatives.

What does the migration process look like in practice?

What the switch to Azure looks like in practice depends strongly on how your systems are currently set up. It often starts with a clear design. This records, for example, how the security is arranged and how different systems need to work together. It is also important to properly involve employees in the process. This way they know what changes are taking place and why this is happening. Of course, you do not have to manage the switch to Azure entirely on your own. There are also specialized organizations that can help you move to Azure.
