Brits opt for affordable fizz as Aldi Champagne sales soar

Aldi ChampagneWhile overall Champagne sales in the UK have hit a 25-year low, with just 22.3 million bottles shipped in 2024, the lowest figure since the millennium,  Aldi is bucking the trend, with its affordable fizz seeing record growth.

The retailer reports a strong surge in demand for its Nicolas de Montbart Champagne, with year-on-year sales rising by 80%. Sales of Aldi’s Veuve Monsigny Champagne, a fan favourite, have also jumped by 50% year-on-year.

Industry experts attribute the decline in Champagne sales to factors like lower alcohol consumption and increased competition from drinks such as cocktails, rosé and other sparkling wines. However, wine expert Sam Caporn notes that shoppers are still choosing Champagne, but prioritising value and quality over premium, high-end brands.

A member of the exclusive Institute of Masters of Wine, Sam says: “While lower alcohol consumption and competition from other drinks are factors, many shoppers are opting for high-quality, affordable alternatives that deliver great value. This shift reflects a broader trend where people want to enjoy exceptional fizz without paying a premium price, and it’s driving the growth of budget-friendly options like Aldi’s Champagnes.”

Julie Ashfield, chief commercial officer at Aldi UK, said: “Everyone deserves a touch of luxury, regardless of their budget. Our commitment to delivering exceptional quality at affordable prices is why, while others see a champagne slump, we’re raising a toast to our customers – the savvy shoppers who know where to find great value.”

Available in stores nationwide now, the multi-award-winning Veuve Monsigny Champagne (£14.95, 75cl), offers a beautiful blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier; aged in cellars to enhance its complexity and length. Achieving SILVER accolades at last year’s International Wine Challenge and The Drinks Business Champagne Masters[4], this bubbly continues to offer fizztastic quality at an affordable price.

While the Nicolas de Montbart Champagne is made from combining Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes, resulting in a subtle elegance on the palate. Bursting with spring fruit and delicate floral notes, it’s an easy-drinking, aperitif-style sparkling, perfect for raising a toast to the champagne resurgence. Nicolas de Montbart Champagne is on promotion from 14th-19th April, down to just £9.99, reduced from £13.99 (75cl).

Aldi’s award-winning Veuve Monsigny Champagne and Nicolas de Monbart Champagne are available in stores nationwide now. Nicolas de Montbart Champagne is on promotion from 14th-19th April.
