Dunelm outdoes itself as consumers seek cosy comfort for the winter, says GlobalData

Following today’s release of Dunelm’s figures for the 13 weeks ending 27 September 2025; Oliver Maddison, retail analyst at GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company, offers his view: “Dunelm outperformed expectations for its Q1 FY2025/26 results, reporting total sales growth of 6.2% on top of strong comparative growth of 3.5% despite having previously noted a lack of recovery in consumer confidence – one can scarcely imagine what it could achieve in strong economic conditions. Its persistently market-leading growth shows the appeal of its broad price architecture, improving convenience credentials, and trend-led offering. The homewares market leader noted that full-year profit before tax (PBT) is progressing as expected, but warned that profits would be backloaded due to cost inflation and investment timelines. It also revealed a 0.8ppt increase in its gross margin, although professed that this was largely due to favourable foreign exchange rates.

“Growth was apparent in both values and volumes, with the retailer’s broad ‘good-better-best’ price architecture facilitating consumers trading up to higher-quality, more design-led items. The volume growth is especially impressive considering GlobalData forecasts a small decline in homewares volumes in 2025. While Dunelm saw growth across categories, it performed especially well in its existing specialism of ‘cosy’ items in home textiles and rugs as consumers prepared their homes for the autumn and winter in anticipation of resurgent inflation increasing both the costs of going out and of heating their homes.

“Digital continued to grow as a share of total sales, reaching 40% penetration as a result of investment in its fast website and click & collect infrastructure. This is likely to continue with the launch of its iOS app (Dunelm made no mention of a timeline for an Android app), and will likely help its cut-through with younger home shoppers. These consumers are clearly a key focus for the retailer, with its student campaign seeing c.40% year-on-year growth, while its new ‘Home of Colour’ brand campaign playing into more youthful online trends and encouraging a higher spending frequency.”
