Greggs opens first café inside Sainsbury’s supermarket at Sheffield store

The partnership between Greggs and Sainsbury’s has taken another step forward with the launch of the first Greggs café inside a Sainsbury’s store. The new Greggs café has opened in Sainsbury’s Crystal Peaks, creating 15 new jobs for the area.

Now open from 7am-7pm Monday to Saturday, and 10am-4pm on Sundays, the new café is the third Greggs shop to open in partnership with Sainsbury’s, following the successful launch of a shop sharing petrol forecourt space earlier this year. It will enable customers shopping at Sainsbury’s Crystal Peaks to choose from Greggs favourites, including freshly prepared sandwiches and bakes, freshly ground Fairtrade coffee and sweet treats. The café also gives customers the option to sit in or takeaway.

Greggs and Sainsbury’s plan to launch more sites together by the end of this year, which will include both petrol filling stations and cafés.

Tony Rowson, property director at Greggs said: “Our first Greggs café with Sainsbury’s is helping us continue to expand and diversify our retail estate as part of our ambitious property strategy. The opening will allow us to provide Greggs favourites to even more customers, in a format that complements Sainsbury’s Crystal Peaks store.”

Elizabeth Newman, director of commercial partnerships at Sainsbury’s, said: “We’re delighted to have welcomed Greggs to another Sainsbury’s store, this time in the form of a fantastic café concept that represents another first for our customers. Greggs has proven very popular at Sainsbury’s petrol station in Biggleswade and we’re expecting the new café in Crystal Peaks to build on its success – I’m really looking forward to hearing what our customers think.”

Reducing food waste is a top priority for both retailers. For example, Sainsbury’s and Greggs are connected to food donation networks comprising hundreds of local charities, allowing them to redistribute any surplus food from their stores to those who need it most.
