Majestic, the UK’s largest specialist wine retailer, has revealed that its organic wine sales have almost doubled over the past year as availability and demand for wines in the planet-friendly category accelerated ahead of expectations.
On the eve of Organic September, Majestic reported that sales of organic wines across its retail and on-trade supply businesses soared 94% during the 12 months to the end of July, compared to the same period the previous year.
In August 2023, Majestic predicted that its organic wine sales would double within three years, at a time when its retail customers and on-trade partners were increasingly seeking organic and sustainable products. But the rate of growth has outpaced those forecasts, driven by improvements in the depth and quality of Majestic’s organic range.
Majestic offered a total of 169 organic wines to its retail customers, Wine Club subscribers and on-trade partners during the 12 months to the end of July. That number stood at 124 in the preceding 12-month period.
Building on the increased availability of high-quality organic wines, the retailer’s latest Wine Club case is focused on the theme of Sustainability, spotlighting green-fingered wine producers from around the world. Of the 30 products being showcased across the Wine Club’s Discovery, Tour and Grand Tour cases, 17 of them are certified organic.
Majestic’s multi-award-winning buying team said that an increasing number of wine producers are now making the switch to organic viticulture, helping to improve the quality, variety and prominence of organic options at Majestic.
Examples of wineries that have made the change include La Commanderie de Peyrassol, one of Majestic’s key strategic partners, which became fully organic in 2022; Château Guiot, which recently made the conversion to organic viticulture; and Pasqua’s popular Rosé ‘Y by 11 Minutes’.
Majestic buying manager Elizabeth Kelly MW said: “We listen to the feedback we get from our colleagues, customers and on-trade partners every day, so we know that demand for organic wines is growing at pace. But we won’t stock a wine simply because it ticks the organic box – it has to fit into our broader range and deliver for the customer on quality and value for money.
“More and more wineries are switching to organic viticulture every year, so there is definitely an upward trend in the volume of high-quality, unique, organic wines being produced around the world. We are delighted to be bringing an increasing number of those to Majestic for our customers to discover and buy – particularly at a time when many of them are actively seeking organic options. That’s a trend we expect to continue in the coming years and we believe we have curated the best selection of organic wines in the UK market to fulfil that demand.”
