Marks & SpencerMarks & Spencer (M&S) is celebrating four Irish colleagues who have each reached the milestone of 25 years of service at its iconic Grafton Street store. These dedicated individuals embody the heart and soul of M&S, having contributed passion and commitment to the brand for over a quarter-century.

M&S recognises the exceptional service of Brenda Burke, Angela Bradley, Gillian Lockhart, and Vivian McSweeney. As part of its ongoing commitment to fostering a positive workplace culture and acknowledging the invaluable contributions of its staff, M&S is highlighting these long-serving colleagues who have helped deliver excellent quality and value for our customers in Ireland.

Steven Cummins, Store Manager, M&S Grafton Street, commented, “The success of M&S Grafton Street is due to the hard work of our incredible store colleagues who consistently go above and beyond for our customers every day. M&S is fortunate to have a loyal and often long-serving workforce, and I’m delighted to acknowledge Brenda, Angela, Gillian, and Vivian for reaching this impressive 25-year milestone.”

Brenda Burke
Brenda Burke, senior sales advisor at M&S and originally from Finglas, has been with the company for 28 years. Starting her retail career more than 35 years ago at Mirror Mirror, she joined M&S as a manager at the Grafton Street store. A denim expert, Brenda manages stock levels and online orders. She credits her colleagues and managers, particularly floor manager Rebecca and store manager Steven, for their support during challenges. Brenda fondly recalls the camaraderie at M&S, from Christmas parties to staff outings, and values how customer interactions have built her confidence. “The support from my colleagues has been invaluable, and the friendships I’ve made mean everything to me.”

Angela Bradley
Angela Bradley, originally from Coolock, Dublin, has worked at M&S for over 25 years. Starting as a part-time sales advisor in the food department, she has witnessed many changes, including new store locations and technological advancements like self-service checkouts and “scan and shop.” Angela values the supportive work environment and strong relationships with colleagues and customers, helping her balance family commitments and her passion for marathon running. She finds retail a rewarding career with many growth opportunities. “The connections I’ve built here make this job truly fulfilling.”

Gillian Lockhart
Gillian Lockhart began her journey with M&S as a part-time sales assistant. Her dedication led her to rise through the ranks to deputy supervisor and now foods section manager at the Grafton Street store. Gillian has played a key role in the company’s growth, even training new staff in Amsterdam for six months. She appreciates the digital advancements that enhance operations and credits the company’s perks and supportive colleagues for her tenure. Gillian fondly remembers working on the St. Patrick’s Day parade for two years and encourages newcomers to embrace each day. “Working hard and staying positive can really pay off in retail.”

Vivian McSweeney
Vivian McSweeney, a Dublin native, brought her experience from convenience retail and a bakery and deli to M&S, starting as a Sales Advisor. Over the years, she has honed her skills across various food sections and now balances a visual merchandising role with her food responsibilities. Vivian values the training opportunities M&S provides, allowing her to broaden her knowledge of the food hall. She highlights benefits, flexible hours, and friendships as key reasons for her 25-year tenure. “Every day is different in retail, and that’s what makes it exciting.”

“The stories of Brenda, Angela, Gillian, and Vivian show how working in retail can lead to long-term, rewarding careers,” said John Paul McShane, Regional Manager for M&S in Ireland. “Retail offers a dynamic and fulfilling career in a vibrant environment where every day brings fresh challenges and opportunities.”
