Whilst the majority of Brits wait until the start of December to put up their Christmas tree (41%), a quarter (25%) said they will be putting their tree up in November¹ this year. Almost two-thirds (61%) of Brits have an artificial tree, meaning they don’t have to worry about the lifespan of their tree when deciding when to decorate.
When it comes to decking the halls, almost half of those surveyed (47%) said they have a distinct colour or style theme for their Christmas decorations, although two in five (41%) said they are ready to give their decor an update this festive season.
Experts at NEXT have predicted the biggest homeware and decor trends for the festive season from bright, bold colour schemes to traditional styles with a hint of glamour, there’s a trend to suit everyone’s taste. Along with Christmas decor stylist, Viktoriia Savchenko at Xmas Decorators, NEXT has provided the ultimate guide to getting your favourite look for this year’s festivities.
How to choose your Christmas decor theme
Viktoriia advises: “The secret is to choose decorations that match your home’s style. Think about your favourite colours, textures, and overall vibe. Try shiny decorations, metal accents, and geometric shapes for a modern home. If you prefer a traditional look, classic colours like red, green, and brown are always a good choice. Remember, the goal is to create a cohesive look that feels festive and familiar.”
Make it modern
“Christmas decor trends are constantly evolving! This year, I see a lot of rich colours and velvet textures. Think deep emerald greens, sapphire blues, and rich reds with gold accents. It’s a bold and luxurious look that adds a touch of sophistication to any home. Additionally, there’s a resurgence of classic Christmas decor with a modern twist. Minimalist trees adorned with velvet ribbons and metallic colour accents offer a timeless yet fresh feel.
“Consider mixing vintage and modern pieces to give your old Christmas decorations a fresh look. I love how vintage ornaments can be paired with modern metallic accents for a unique and eclectic style. Additionally, incorporating modern materials like metallics and glass can add a contemporary touch. Remember the power of lighting. Upgrading your old fairy lights to LED can instantly give your decorations a more modern look.”
The team at NEXT have shared their top Christmas decor trend predictions for 2024, below.
Christmas Cheer
Image: NEXT
Typically more of a traditional festive style, Christmas Cheer hones in on the classic, warm, and nostalgic feel of a family Christmas. Imagine how you might feel in a cosy wood cabin in the snow. This theme includes timeless festive patterns like red and green tartan, along with knitted textures and stunning wreaths to give a cosy feel.
The colour scheme for this trend is traditional – rich shades of red and green, accessorised with brassy golds. Candlelight complements these warm tones, so opt for soft lighting to create a snug ambience.
Nordic Wonderland
Image: NEXT
The Nordic Wonderland trend leans into light and bright Scandi-style interiors with a focus on maintaining this theme throughout your decorations. The colour scheme for this aesthetic is neutral incorporating shades of white, cream and beige combined with natural materials like oak wood and wool.
This theme includes elements of nature such as pine branches, stars, and wooden ornaments. Christmas trees dressed in white skirts and adorned with neutral baubles are a key focal point in a Nordic Wonderland home.
Festive Elegance
Image: NEXT
A modern take on classic Christmas decor, Festive Elegance symbolises true woodland glamour. Shiny, bold and glitzy, this theme uses warm mixed metals to draw the eye with a contrast to the natural elements of a Christmas tree or wreath.
Mixing copper, gold and silver decorations, this theme is a luxe look. Combining baubles and statement ornaments with matte or shiny finishes can create an impactful scheme. For extra impact, use shades of orange and brown to complement the warmth of the metals. Frosted foliage, woodland animals and sparkling accents are the best accessories to achieve this festive look.
Midnight Luxe

Midnight Luxe uses a mix of dark and metallic colours to give your festive decorations a cosy, sophisticated look. Dark greens, navy and gold or silver make a chic colour scheme, best paired with rich textures like velvet and satin to get this look.
This theme has a luxurious and grown-up feel to it, tying in traditional colours with bolder, modern influences.
Festive Fun

Festive fun is all about embracing novelty decorations such as gonks, along with gingerbread figures, snowmen and reindeer. This is a playful and fun decor style to adopt in your home.
Gonks are a big feature in Christmas decor, wrapping and even tableware this year. These gnome-like figures with tall hats and furry beards are not only cute but fit the trending Nordic-inspired aesthetics perfectly.
Winter Frost

If you want to feel like you’ve just stepped into the North Pole when you enter your home, a Winter Frost theme is perfect! Combining winter whites with shimmery silver metallics, this trend feels bright and fresh. Traditional, minimal symbols like stars, hearts and angel shapes are big features in this trend.
Finish off this trend by using materials like wool and satin, combined with warm lighting to create a cosy winter wonderland in your home.
Scandi Monochrome
Image: NEXT
Monochrome scandi-style homes have been a big trend in recent years, so if you want a decor style to match your sleek, minimal interiors, this is the one for you.
To get this look, use black, white and grey tableware for your Christmas dinner table setting, along with monochrome baubles on your tree and textured paper wall hangings and contemporary wreaths. This is a great trend for DIY lovers, as cutting snowflakes and stars out of card make lovely decorations.
Merry & Bright
Image: NEXT
Merry and bright is all about glitz and glam. Oversized bows were a big trend last year and they’re here to stay in 2024. Whether in place of a star or angel as your tree topper, laden across the tree or to decorate your table, bows make a pretty and elegant choice that feels festive at this time of year.
Go bold with your colour scheme with bright colours of pink, green and yellow. Add hints of sparkle throughout your decoration to give the ultimate glitzy feel.
