Top tips for keeping your customer data secure

customer dataThe security of personal data is a vital concern these days, with widespread hacking and other forms of data breaches happening on a regular basis.

Fortunately, maintaining your personal data out of the wrong hands is made easier with the help of tools such as privacy settings and VPNs. Nowadays, it is even possible to opt out of data brokers’ databases with data removal tools such as Incogni. This means that, by signing up, users can free themselves of hundreds of hours’ worth of manual data removal, as the company will do it all for them.

For retail businesses, however, the task of protecting the vital data of hundreds, if not thousands, of consumers may seem a little more daunting, but is no less crucial. After all, your customers will want reassurance that their personal information is well-protected, or they may take their business elsewhere, meaning you will miss out on future sales.

To provide adequate data security and keep your customers happy, here are some helpful tips for protecting their information from potential hacks and from data brokers.

Provide a transparent privacy policy

When it comes to the handling of vital data, transparency is clear. Your customers will expect you to have a clear and comprehensive privacy policy so they know exactly how their data is being handled and whom it is being shared with. If you wilfully mislead your customers, you could face serious legal consequences, so make sure everything is clear and upfront at all times.

Not only will this protect you from any legal action, but it will also help to build your customer’s trust in you, which is an important part of building up a loyal client base.

Encryption is your best friend

Encryption is a very effective – but woefully underused – tool for protecting sensitive data, and that’s why it’s a compulsory requirement for eCommerce sites offering Visa and MasterCard as payment methods. If you will be storing sensitive information on your company’s server then encryption is essential to protect against hacking.

These days, cutting-edge encryption technology is readily available and should be a vital part of any online busin

ess’s digital protection arsenal.

Keep your software up-to-date

Speaking of cutting-edge software, as well as making sure your eCommerce platform is encrypted to secure payment details and other sensitive data, it’s also recommended that you keep your software updated regularly.

Hackers are constantly trying to breach software defences. If you have out-of-date software they are more likely to find a way in. While these updates do cost money, in the long run, they will bring many benefits and give both you and your customers peace of mind.

Put a hack attack plan in place

While all retail businesses hope that a data breach will never take place, it’s still a good idea to have a contingency plan in place just in case an attack does happen. This plan should include how to maintain vital business functions, how to contact customers to let them know there has been an attack, and how to transfer your data to a more secure location.

By following these simple but effective steps, your customer data be better protected against any form of breach.
