Better Eggs cracks major retail launch with Asda as Britain’s first free-range egg brand giving hens more space to live and roam

Better EggsBetter Eggs, a family-run brand built on welfare, nutrition, taste and quality, has secured its first national supermarket listing at Asda.

Available in selected stores nationwide, the range includes six Medium (£2.24), six Large (£2.48) and ten Mixed Weight (£3.50) packs.

Produced in Lincolnshire, the grain capital of Great Britain, Better Eggs controls every stage of production – including cultivating grain to milling all its own feed – creating a fully traceable food chain and reducing reliance on imported feed. This closed-loop approach cuts food miles and carbon footprint while allowing bespoke, nutrient-rich diets that boost both hen health and egg quality.

With 72% of shoppers now factoring sustainability into their purchasing decisions (British Lion, 2024), Better Eggs meets a growing appetite for responsibly produced, high-welfare British food. Following its successful Asda debut, the brand is already exploring additional national retail opportunities.

“Britain deserves better eggs. That’s why we control every step from farm to fridge – giving shoppers eggs that are richer in taste, higher in welfare and lower in environmental impact,” said Henry O’Connor, creator of Better Eggs. “Our hens live the ‘Better’ way – exploring fields, roosting in spacious sheds and eating the best grain that we’ve milled ourselves. By managing the whole journey, we deliver fresher eggs, respect animal welfare and protect the planet.”

The brand’s ethical approach to the production journey also ensures consumers can enjoy eggs with rich, golden yolks and freshness – ideal for versatile dishes, poaching, baking or frying.

Better Eggs was launched by L J Fairburn & Son – the team behind Fairburn’s – which supplies supermarkets across the UK. The British, family run business has been delivering quality, fresh, and sustainably produced eggs since 1951.

Daniel Fairburn, CEO of L J Fairburn & Son, added: “After more than 75 years as an independent, family-run egg producer, Better Eggs brings together our heritage and a new vision for the future. With lower stocking densities, certifications from the British Lion Code and RSPCA assured, we’re proving that high welfare and sustainability can go hand in hand with great value and taste.”

Operating a fully integrated supply chain within 25 miles of its headquarters, Better Eggs collects, grades and packs its eggs daily in one of the UK’s most advanced facilities. All packaging is made from 100% recycled fibre, which can be recycled up to seven times.

The company has already removed 400 tonnes of plastic, powers its farms, mill and headquarters with 100% renewable solar energy, and maintains a tight national supply radius to minimise transport emissions. Packaging is designed with end-of-life in mind – fibre materials are biodegradable and recyclable, reducing long-term waste.
