Cornish Bakery openes first bakery of the year in Newbury

Cornish Bakery Cornish Bakery, the independent, founder-driven company first started in Mevagissey, Cornwall, has opened its first bakery of the year in Newbury. This completely bespoke concept was opened on Saturday 7th March and has seen the rejuvenation of a distinctive, prominent Art Deco style building in Northbrook Street.

The new design-led ‘bakery of light and optimism’ highlights and showcases the original features of the 1920s property and hosts the company’s first ever fully open ‘Saturday Kitchen’ style bakery kitchen.

The location has been christened the ‘bakery of light and optimism’ owing to its beautiful Art Deco window frontage that allows abundant natural light to stream in, showcasing the classic modernist architecture, creating a bright and airy environment. High ceilings, an open plan design and a natural paint palette provide a sense of uplifting optimism.

The stylish new bakery also features a fully open chef’s kitchen ‘island’ so visitors can experience the products being kneaded, shaped and baked in real time. This welcoming environment will not only be a place to enjoy great food and coffee, but also a hub for shared Newbury experiences, with opportunities for guests to chat with the Cornish Bakery team, take part in workshops, and join in a programme of special events hosted throughout the year.

Inside, the bakery showcases a refined industrial aesthetic that feels both modern and warmly welcoming. The space is defined by stripped-back interiors, with rough textured walls and polished concrete floors providing a tactile, understated backdrop. Industrial charm runs throughout, with black metal details, stainless steel accents and a thoughtful mix of steel and wood that subtly nods to the practical workings of a traditional bakery.

This raw, utilitarian palette is softened and brought to life with organic touches, including indoor plants, warm rice paper pendant lamps and pops of vibrant colour across shelving, doors and exterior features. Striking neon signage adds a contemporary edge, creating a dynamic contrast between the artisanal craftsmanship of baking and a bold, modern design sensibility.

Designed with sociability and connection in mind, Newbury’s Cornish Bakery is a truly interactive space that invites the local community to engage with the craft of baking. Blurring the traditional lines between front and back of house, the open and fluid layout will bring guests closer to the action, encouraging conversation and curiosity as bakers and baristas work in full view.

Cornish Bakery managing director, Mat Finch said: “We are delighted to have opened our bespoke bakery of light in Newbury in such a prominent location and interesting building that beautifully blends heritage with modern retail appeal. This marks an exciting investment in the high street, transforming a stunning, but previously ‘underplayed’ and more recently vacant property into a contemporary, premium bakery destination for both locals and visitors.”

Finch continued:  “Our team has worked diligently to create a truly distinctive space, where exceptional food and expertly crafted Cornish-roasted coffee can be enjoyed in a welcoming and thoughtfully designed environment. This fully open kitchen is a first for Cornish Bakery and we’re thrilled to bring this special addition to Newbury.”

The bakery of light and optimism will be a true community hub. A place to enjoy a morning flat white and freshly made pastry, lunch and afternoon treats. A space for the community to come together for frequent events such as barista classes, baking classes and other activities across day and night.

The Newbury Bakery Manager and team are ready to welcome customers from 8am – 6pm every day of the week from now.
