Art has long been central to Spier’s brand story. Through the Spier Arts Trust, the farm rotates a collection of more than 3,200 contemporary artworks by local South African artists, displayed across the farm in gardens, walkways and buildings. This philosophy extends far beyond the farm. The Spier Arts Trust also curates the global Nando’s art collection, which features more than 32,000 original Southern African artworks across over 1,200 restaurants worldwide, spanning five continents. Seen by millions of diners every day, the collection reflects a shared belief that art should be accessible, spark conversation and champion both emerging and established talent.
Three talented South African artists: Norman O’Flynn, Audrey Anderson and Emma C. Aspeling have been selected to feature on the 250ml Spier Canned Sauvignon Blanc 2025, Merlot 2024 and Rosé 2025. The same artists, along with many others represented by the Spier Arts Trust, also feature on the walls of Nando’s restaurants worldwide.
“Our canned wine offering allows us to meet drinkers where they are — in the moment, around the table and without pretence,” says Kathryn Cilliers, Marketing Director at Spier. “Refreshing the can designs gives us an opportunity to shine a brighter light on the artists we support through the Spier Arts Trust. Seeing these cans enjoyed in Nando’s restaurants is a natural fit, bringing together bold food, expressive wine and contemporary South African creativity in a way that feels relevant and accessible.”
About the artwork and artists
The cans feature works by Norman O’Flynn, Audrey Anderson and Emma C. Aspeling:
- Be Still Life by Norman O’Flynn (Spier Canned Sauvignon Blanc 2025): O’Flynn brings a distinctly South African twist to pop art, blending personal history with cultural commentary. Trained at the University of Cape Town, his work spans sculpture and still life and tackles subjects from religion to celebrity culture with confidence and wit.
- Zig Zag by Audrey Anderson (Spier Canned Merlot 2024): Inspired by the winding roads of the Little Karoo, Zig Zag captures how landscapes reveal themselves up close. Painted from Anderson’s farm stoep in Calitzdorp, the work reflects her belief that things are rarely what they seem from a distance.
- Our Skin Contains a Universe by Emma C. Aspeling (Spier Canned Rosé 2025): Based in the Western Cape, Aspeling’s work explores energy, movement and connection, celebrating the idea that we are all part of something larger.
