ASDA’s weak Q2 performance accelerates market share losses, says GlobalData

Following today’s release of ASDA’s figures for the second quarter ending 30 June 2025; Eleanor Simpson-Gould, senior retail analyst at GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company, offers her view: “ASDA’s Q2 FY2025 results put it firmly in last place among the leading UK food & grocery players. Suffering a further decline in total revenue on already weak comparatives, ASDA’s latest performance is bleak. It continues to be the only major player experiencing decreasing sales, an impressive feat considering the UK food & grocery market accelerated 5.4% between April and June 2025. We estimate that ASDA’s share of the UK food & grocery market will fall 0.8ppts in 2025, placing it within touching distance of Aldi and losing ground to traditional rivals. This weak performance is a far cry from competitor Sainsbury’s total retail (exc. fuel) sales uplift of 4.9% for the 16 weeks to 21 June 2025. The prospect of the longstanding Big Four supermarket slipping to fifth place is intensifying, and rising food inflation will push more consumers towards competitors.

“ASDA’s George clothing performance outshines its lacklustre overall results, yet even in its strongest category, like-for-like sales slowed to 2.5% against a weak comparative. Securing stronger growth in its clothing range will be further complicated following Tesco’s launch of F&F clothing to its online marketplace in May 2025. The back-to-school shopping period is fruitful for ASDA. It must highlight the high quality of its range, featuring reinforced knees in its trousers and stain-resistant fabrics, to appeal to families looking for affordable back-to-school uniforms

“One of ASDA’s few latent strengths, which gives the grocer an edge over discounters, is its convenience format Express. Announcing plans to open 20 new Express stores in October 2025, ASDA is aptly addressing a core issue of proximity to customers. Given the sparseness of the grocer’s supermarket formats compared to Sainsbury’s and Tesco, these Express stores represent an opportunity to rebuild ASDA’s relevance with consumers.”
