Ecover launches industry-first plastic-free dishwasher tablets

Pioneering cleaning brand, Ecover, has launched the first-in-category dishwasher tablets with an invisible plastic-free^ coating. Use of this brand-new household product can help reduce aquatic plastic pollution which, according to a study by University of Birmingham, is the UK public’s most important environmental problem to tackle.

Available in All In One and All In One Power, the new dish tablets are thoughtfully made with a biodegradable, quick dry rinse aid formula and salt action sparkle. The All-In-One Power variant boasts 40 per cent more stain removing enzymes* for improved cleaning power.

Each compact box has been made with 60 per cent post-consumer recycled cardboard and is packed airtight like sardines, freeing up 68 per cent more space under the sink for Ecover users**. The tablets, which feature a mandarin and lemongrass fragrance, are available nationwide in-store and online at Tesco and Waitrose.

“As rebels of the cleaning aisle, Ecover has always challenged the status quo, building a legacy of innovative cleaning solutions that are progressively cleaner and greener,” an Ecover spokesperson said. “This launch marks a significant milestone in engineering plastic out of products and after several years of hard work, we’re proud to have our new dishwasher tablets in homes across the country.”

Whilst EU legislation protecting both consumers and the planet against greenwashing won’t be enforced until September 2026, lack of transparency around product claims is an issue Ecover has been actively combatting for many years. It’s important to the brand to be proactive about the fact that whilst the dishwasher tablets are not wrapped in plastic of any kind including polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH/PVA), the product in its entirety isn’t plastic-free as the fully recyclable box they are packaged in has a very thin plastic lining to protect its contents from moisture.
